The population of the county grew on the banks of the Wabash River at what is today Lafayette, Indiana. The city was platted in 1825 and named after Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette. On the opposite bank, a number of settlements grew into West Lafayette in the mid-19th century.
Today, the cities, and the outlying towns of the county boast an impressive collection of historic districts and museums, diverse architecture, and a variety of entertainment and recreational opportunities of interest to all ages and tastes.
