History
Laid out by Augustus Wylie in 1836, West Lafayette was originally located in the Wabash River floodplain south of the present levee. Because of the regular flooding, though, the town was never built and the present city was formed in 1888 by the merger of the towns of Chauncey, Oakwood and Kingston. Located on a bluff across the Wabash River from Lafayette, the three towns that had been small suburban villages became one. The new town of Chauncey remained small until Purdue University was opened in 1869. In 1871, Chauncey voted to be annexed by Lafayette so it could take advantage of the infrastructure provided by Lafayette, but the plan was rejected because the cost of improvements would be too high. By the time of West Lafayette’s formation in 1888, the growth of the university was instrumental in the growth of the little town. By the 1940’s, West Lafayette had emerged as its own independent suburban city.
